COMPLEX GAMING has tallied up a wishlist of actresses that would be ideal casting for Aveline de Grandpre in the would-be (probably never gonna happen) Assassin's Creed III: Liberation film and to be honest, the list is incredibly disappointing. Check out the picspam below and leave your thoughts in the comments.
FOR STARTERS, the dreamcast choices are problematic from the get-go. With the exception of Gabrielle Union and maybe Kerry Washington, the author has gone out of their way to pick extremely light-skinned actresses and entertainers, none of which meet Aveline's complexion in either the game or the promotional material that doesn't have her washed out in high contrasted light.
Moreover a lot of these choices just seem so far fetched and "spur-of-the-moment" as though the author wanted to post something legitimate about Liberation, but went the Comic Book Movie.com route and defaulted on a dreamcasting post at the last minute and chose the most familiar or far fetched choices available to them. They don't offer reasons behind the choices or why they think these actresses/singers would be great choices. Everything is left to the imagination of the person clicking on the article (they might as well have thrown in Aaliyah and Keri Hilson for extra measure this list is so random).
10. HALLIE BERRY

MOD: Halle Berry is an utter misstep here, primarily because of her age (she's too old) and primarily because she falls into the same category as Zoe Saldana (a lack of imagination when it comes to dreamcasting for women of color characters that are Black).
9. ZOE KRAVITZ

8. RIHANNA

MOD: It would be a stretch of the imagination to assume Rihanna was chosen because of the concept art of Aveline released recently (she is ultimately seen as the ideal woman of color to model your WOC characters after, apparently). However, Rihanna so far only has one film to her name (Battleship) and realistically I believe it's safe to say she couldn't carry a film on her own because of where her concentration presently lies (music and not acting and getting better at performing on screen in a non-musical role). She only marginally, barely, passes as a plausible dreamcast because she was born in the islands of Barbados ---- (miles away from being Haitian Creole).
7. MALIKA HAQQ

MOD: The young twin-actress that appeared in Disney's Sky High alongside her twin Khadijah Haqq, is an unknown. Still I'm not agreeing with this particular bit of dreamcasting.
6. ZOE SALDANA

MOD: Already dubbed the "New Halle Berry" of Hollywood as a result of her age (below 40) and skin complexion, I could not tell you how tired I am of seeing Zoe Saldana being dreamcast as every dark skinned woman of color character. She has so far done nothing of reputation aside from the extremely problematic AVATAR and the ensemble driven Star Trek, neither of which are examples of truly great performances that implicate she could carry a film on her own as the central focus. On top of that, the constant dreamcast selection of Saldana stems from the light-skinned privilege or preference that's been subconsciously taught. Long story short, no to Saldana.
5. LAUREN LONDON

4. GABRIELLE UNION

3. CASSIE

2. MEGAN GOOD

1. KERRY WASHINGTON

MOD: Kerry Washington is a type of actress who cannot fit into just any ole role; she's definitely the kind of actress that seems suited to one thing over the other and I cannot see her as an assassin wielding a hidden blade or perfecting a French accent.

Date: 2012-11-09 06:27 pm (UTC)*sigh* I'm terrible with actor names, so my dreamcast basically boils down to one thing: muscles! I wanna see her shoulders flexing when she beats people to death! I'm not down on small women who can kick ass, but this waif-fu shit in hollywood drives me crazy.
